How easy is it to suddenly feel less than? Without even knowing it, all your hard work in personal growth has thrown you back into your ‘old’ ways of thinking? A late night, sick child, an argument, a comment made - can cause us to feel overwhelmed to fall back and get stuck…
Why is being overwhelmed and busy such an easy emotion to call upon? Why can I access it so easily?
The words’ overwhelmed and busy have become a ‘thing’ we can tangibly see and feel – we totally get it when someone feels this way; we can almost see it playing out and seeing them being in a state of ‘overwhelmed and busy’, and therefore it has become a ‘thing’, and so our minds find it easy to fall back into an object of overwhelm and busy.
Suppose you think about being overwhelmed as being busy – they suddenly have a place in our world. In that case, they occupy space. They almost become an object of emotions. Turning them into physical things like being able to take a book filled with all the elements of overwhelm and busy so that when we feel our heart flutter, our heads heat up, and our emotions feel mixed, we can then grab the book of overwhelm and busy and let it be the explanation of our feelings and emotions.
But when you really take a moment to think – why am I feeling this way? What is the purpose of this emotion? What is it serving me right now? What is triggering this emotion?
And when you answer these questions, you realise that they often feed a core need – maybe my certainty has been shaken up? Perhaps my growth has been taken away as I have become focused on my role as a parent and to care – I know my significance is there as I look after my sick child but has something else been taken?
Then add in the guilt for feeling frustrated at your sick child, anger for life continuing when you haven’t slept, and exhaustion from being consciously awake in case your little ones call you… we prefer to grab our book of overwhelmed and busy to help explain how we are feeling without digging deep and figuring stuff out…
So, we indeed are in charge of how we feel, see the world and want our days, months and years to play out. Knowing what we are doing and how we react helps us come out the other side quicker.
We will never have all our emotions switched to happiness and bliss daily. We will experience all the human emotions we are so blessed to have even with all the coaching in the world – but what we do have the power of is deciding how to move with it, how to handle it and how long to hold on to it.
Ask yourself each day – what am I focusing on? What do I want to hold onto? How do I want my day to end?
Then decide what I am willing to – hold onto, give up and grow into?
Get comfortable being in the uncomfortable – this is how you move from your inner circle of what you know through the threshold of fear, uncertainty, and worry and break out into endless possibilities.
